Long before Dubai had skyscrapers, it had gold — and the Gold Souk in Deira is where that history is still very much alive. Row after row of shopfronts glitter with more jewellery than you’ll likely see anywhere else in one place.
What makes it worth a visit
Even if you’re not buying, it’s worth wandering just for the spectacle — window displays stacked with necklaces, bangles and elaborate bridal sets, and shopkeepers happy to chat even without a sale in mind.
If you are buying
Gold here is typically sold by weight plus a workmanship charge, and haggling on that workmanship fee is completely normal. Check the daily gold rate before you go so you know roughly what a fair price looks like.
Compare a few shops before committing — prices for the same design can vary more than you’d expect.
Getting there and timing
- The Deira side of the creek is easiest reached by metro plus a short walk, or a classic abra boat crossing for the scenic route.
- Early evening is the sweet spot — cooler air, and the souk is lit up and at its most atmospheric.
- Pair it with the nearby Spice Souk for a longer, more textured walk through old Dubai.
Final thought
You don’t need to buy anything to enjoy the Gold Souk — it’s one of the few places in Dubai where the experience itself, not the price tag, is the main event.
